Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the ziti pasta and cook until al dente, about 8 minutes. Drain and set aside.

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until translucent. Stir in minced garlic and ground beef, and cook until browned.

Stir in tomato sauce, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer the sauce for 10–12 minutes until slightly thickened. Taste and adjust seasoning.

In a large bowl, combine cooked pasta, ricotta cheese, and half of the tomato sauce. Mix gently to coat the pasta evenly.

Spread a thin layer of sauce on the bottom of a baking dish. Add half of the pasta mixture, sprinkle with mozzarella and parmesan. Repeat the layers and finish with cheese on top.
